Now, with the Bolton name in disgrace due to her father's profligate ways, marrying an elderly squire might be the only way to save her family from absolute ruin. But when she meets the infamous Duke of Clarewood, old dreams—and old passions—are awakened as never before. Yet she cannot accept his shocking proposition! He is the wealthiest, most powerful peer in the realm, and having witnessed the cold horror of marriage as a child, he has vowed never to wed. But Alexandra Bolton inflames him as no woman has ever done, and she also serves him his first rejection!

Now Clarewood—who always gets what he wants—will choose which rules to play. But when passion finally brings them together, a terrible secret threatens to tear them apart. Hope she writes about Olivia and Jack, I'd read that. Seriously, I couldn’t put this book down. I was hooked from the very first word. While I don’t believe her mother ever intended for her to put her life on hold, that’s exactly what she does to take care of her two younger sisters and increasingly drunk and belligerant father. I was hooked from the very first word. Alexandra gives up the love of her life to fulfill a vow she made to her mother. While I don’t believe her mother ever intended for her to put her life on hold, that’s exactly what she does to take care of her two younger sisters and increasingly drunk and belligerant father.

Unable to afford the basic things that the ladies of her class takes for granted, Alexandra considers marrying a much older Squire in order to provide financially for her family. But when the Squire invites her family to a ball, she meets and falls head over heels for Stephen Mowbray, the Duke of Clarewood. Alexandra is duty bound. She is a woman of her word and takes her responsibilities seriously. But she is also unfailingly kind and is unwilling to accept handouts or charity. Even when faced with viscious and untrue gossip, Alexandra holds her head up high and refuses to let anyone see her sweat. The girl is made of some strong stuff and has a will of steel.

Stephen Mowbray is your typical tall dark and handsome duke though his story is a little unusual. He is the bastard son of Sir Rex de Warrene, but was raised by Tom Mowbray the Duke of Clarewood as his own. But the Duke always resented the fact that he could never have a child of his own and treated Stephen with contempt.

Mirroring his Father, Stephen is cold, calculating, and always gets what he wants without making promises in return. Forunately Stephen isn’t all hard. His close cousins and half brothers and sisters showed him kindness and love throughout his life, and his birth father always lets him know that he is proud of him. Stephen does great things for the poor and downtrodden, and always treats his family well. The romance between these two was spellbinding. Of course riddled with problems and misunderstandings. There were a few times that Stephen really pissed me off.

I didn’t like that he felt so entitled without any thought of the consequences for others. And Alexandra exasperated me when she wouldn’t take the time to explain herself. She’d just accept his fury and run off without even trying to make him understand her. But even so, the story was captivating and I just had to know what was going to happen. Joyce did a great job with this book.

I loved meeting the de Warrene clan and the love between Stephen and Alexandra could not be denied. Depsite the gossip, the lies, and the obstacles, these two finally managed to get it right. My only complaint is that Joyce really used the word dismayed A LOT! OMG everybody was dismayed all the time! Other than that, great book and I will be getting the other de Warrene titles. I really enjoyed this story. It was not the typical historical romance but the two characters grabbed my interest as soon as started reading.

Stephen Mowbray, the Duke of Clarewood, is not the typical hero, but is the illegitimate son of Sir Rex de Warenne (so anyone who has read any of the previous de Warenne Dynasty series or specifically A Lady at Last is probably programmed to like him because of the family connection). Stephen Mowbray was raised by the Duke of Clarewood who was cold and heartless, in fact even on his death bed he could not admit or even say that he was proud of his son, he only had Stephen promise to take care of Clarewood/duchy.

His exact words were “Clarewood is everything.Clarewood is your duty.” Stephen, having never still felt like he truly was a de Warenne, still sought out the approval of his father, the Duke even fifteen years after his death. He made his life about the duchy and for years had coldly seeking out a wife but could not find any interest in a debutante. However, one night at the birthday party of his half-sister, our heroine Alexandra Bolton falls into his arms and piques his interest as she clearly not recently graduate of the schoolroom. However, his interest in Alex was far from honorable and needless to say their journey to happily ever after was extremely bumpy. Yet these two characters who had allowed promises they made to their dying parents to color their decisions and make their lives less than happy, do find happiness with each other in the end.

The de Warenne legacy continue with Stephen Mowbray and Alexandra Bolton's tempestuous and passionate love in An Impossible Attraction. The instant they meet there is no denying the immediate and powerful attraction between them. For Alexandra it is an impossible attraction because she is not in his league and cannot expect marriage, while for Stephen it is an attraction he intends to pursue despite dishonorable intent.

Thus, the pursuit and seduction begin, and eventually the surrender. What begins as an improper arrangement between them, awakens old passions and feelings within Alexandra and touches emotions Stephen never knew he could feel. However, misunderstandings and secrets threaten their love and it is trust that they need to find before they can find love. The premise is quite ordinary and predictable, and the setting is restrained. The whole story only takes place in Edgemont Way, Clarewood, and briefly in London but the intensity of emotions shared between Alexandra and Stephen makes up for it.

There are many passionate moments whether in love or anger that is both heart-tugging and emotionally evoking. After one winner and one loser I decided to give Joyce another try. The blurb sounded like an emotional story which is always favourites of mine. I didn't like it as much as The Perfect Bride but it was definitely better than A Dangerous Love. He is not a bad guy but around the heroine he behaves abominably. He is decided to have Alex has his mistress despite the fact that she is a gentlewoman. She wants to marry well to help her family but between Clarewood's pressure and her attraction to him she eventually bends to his will. Clarewood seemed to me too marked by his past, he was too arrogant, too hard, too stubborn. He wanted things to be just as he wanted them no matter how bad they might be for Alex. For a while I actually despaired that he would come to his senses.

My favourite part was when Alex decided to leave him and all the heartache behind to try to make it on her own. But she eventually falls in his power again. I thought there was much potential for poignancy here but not all was fulfilled as it was such a mismatch the power they each had. I did like the romance between Clarewood's mother and her beau and was very sorry that there wasn't much about them.

But this novel really surprised me, I appreciated the skill of the writer in describing the mutation in the male character. Arid man who thinks he does not know the love. Besides that I also liked how the author described the personality and the suffering of the female character, who have a strong and fighting temperament but this one is undermined by the love for the man who can't correspond her, man that she loved but wrong.

She belive that they can't understand each other. But they are wrong. 4 stars and 1/5 because I don't like the story of Stephen's mother. Boring me when I only whant know the story about Alexandra and Stephen! A deWarenne Dynasty historical romance novel (and I LOVED the earlier 'Masquerade' novel). Brenda Joyce is wonderful, whether she is writing a historical romance or Paranormal Romance (which are EXCELLENT).

I can feel something between them lol. And for the hero IDK he gives me migraine hahahahahahaha Goodness!

Somehow their love story (Alexandra and Stephen) wasn't enough to show more interaction. Y.Y most part of the book they were just avoiding each other so it's kind of sad because I was so excited about Stephen's book Y.Y. Where was the romance? There was absolutely no relationship development between Stephan and Alexandra in the friendship direction let alone romance. While there was no relationship development of any kind between the hero and heroin there was more time spent between them with him trying to entice her into being his mistress and that was merely sending gifs for nearly half the book and no time actually spent together. There wasn't even the oppertunity for a friendship to develop which may have made things more forgiveable.

In terms of characters Alexandra was one of my least favorite heroins ever.she doesn't even deserve the term. Boring far too naive and wishy washy. Spent more time crying and worrying than anything else. And deciding that she's fallen in love was far too unbelievable and didn't even seem to have the love at first sight working as explanation. It was too obvious to myself and any reader that it was the thought she was in love with. Stephan at least grew throughout the story and I felt his realization of love was somewhat believable despite the obvious lack of any real time spent in each others company. For the msot part I enjoyed him espeically his interactions with other characters such as Alexai and the other female members of the de Warren family.

Where his personality lacked however, was in his tyranny and uncareing attitude that took up a great deal of the story which came with his lack of thinking he was in the wrong. There was too much darkness in his character which is normal for historical romance books but using desprictions of the past and his childhood didn't cut it as a good enough excuse to warrant the behavior through so much of the book. His lighter side was only seen before friends but never Alexandra, even when trying to woe her into being his mistress. And the lightness came far too late in the book by that time id grown tired of it and the excuse of his father. I did however, find the other characters (de Warren's) more intersting and entertaining then either Stephan or Alexandra.

I am intersted to read Randolph's story and if Alexandra's sisters might once again appear in the books to come. Sadly I felt the plot did have potenial with good plot points that read at the right pace for readers. While it is a well used plot line there were certain twists added in that made the plot a little more unique. However, with no character growth among the main characters the story plot couldn't properly be carried out and left a reader wanting and annoyed. In conclusion I can hardly believe that this book is written by Brenda Joyce let alone in her de Warren Dyanasy series.

I sadly think of An Impossible Attraction is a shameful addition to the engaging fully romantic stories of the previous de Warren Dynasy series. Those books tell such wonderful romantic tales of love and include enganging loveable characters that follow through with entertaining plots bound to keep you reading and wanting more. Sadly this book wasn't what was wanted.

I am going to prentend that it isn't part of the series.and it makes me sad having to say that about a book that is a part of one of my all time favorite series and by an author I have always enjoyed. There is a light at the end of the tunnel however, with the story that is to follow being the much anticipated story of Alexai and Elysse. I don't usually read historical romances but the pretty cover and interesting summary caught my eye. The plot was great, the characters even greater. He decides that its time that Alexandra husband and who better than the old, ugly farmer who is nearly twice her age. I feel really sorry for Alexandra because twenty six in today standards isn't that old to not be married but in those days she was basically viewed as an old woman. So her new rather old courter invites Alexandra and her two sisters to a ball where she meets the dashing Duke of Clarewood, Stephen. I found his advances at the begging rather romantic and forward.

I understand why she rejected him and I was so upset when she was left on the streets. Stephen has a rather nasty temper and I really didn't appreciate his 'loyalty' when he was sleeping with all the prostitutes during their fight. Alexandra can hug another man and he would go ballistic. If he loved her so much I don't know why he would pay for services from another woman. I absolutely digested this book. I got through it in one sitting.

I just couldn't put it down, I needed to know what happened next. It was well written and an enjoyable story to read, definitely rate it. I must begin by saying I enjoyed the book very much. I cried along with Alexandra.

But I must also add that I couldn't understand how PRIDE was such a virtue. I write the words in capitals because the entire book makes so much of the fact that she is proud, as though that were a good thing. She is willing to sacrifice everything because she is proud? She is willing to sacrifice everything because she is proud? Are these people supposedly not Christian? Then isn't pride a sin? The Duke of Clarewood is gorgeous, dashing, generous and cold. Fine as far as descriptions of aristocrats go. I got him, I even loved him by the end of the book. Alexandra Bolton on the other hand came across as fairly cold herself, yes she is polite, kind and good, but so much pride, when life has been so hard on her seemed at times a false and conceited attitude.

And the de Warrenne family just struck me as overly cheerful - the English aristocracy isn't this easy-going. So I have grave doubts about some of the characterisation. I accept that this is a fantasy romance, it is not real, but I adore Joyce's work and feel she let herself down a bit here. I'm sure I'm one of very few who feel this way, but I felt I had to say it nonetheless. I guess partly it all boils down to cultural differences. I really loved this book. The moment I got it I could not stop reading it.

The love story was remarkable, even though he thought she was a gold digger, she eventually proved him wrong with her pride. Pride on the other hand is a taboo when in love but fortunately can be beneficial according to the novel. She seemed like a strong woman but when it came to her father she totally ignored what was wrong with him and blamed her disease on herself. I was really happy when Stephen dealt with the situation himself and it really funny to see him jealous both being ignorant of each others feelings.

Overall, this book was a clear romantic winner, all of Brenda's books are wonderfully created. If you have ever read anything from the deWarenne series and liked it, run don't walk to a bookstore and purchase 'An Impossible Attraction.'

I mean, I do read her. And enjoy her books.

But none of them has hit me like An Impossible Attraction. It had me in tears, three different times. The book is so well written, it feels like their pain is yours. It is a lovely story.

With characters that are full and well rounded. I absolutely LOVED this book. I cannot say enough.

It will break your heart. It will make you laugh. It is what a romance novel is all about, romance! Excellent job. One of my favorite books in a long time. Alexandra Bolton became a seamstress to bring in needed money for her family. However, in 1845 her wastrel widower father informs her he needs funds to pay debts so she will marry either wealthy middle aged Squire Denney or some other affluent member of the Ton.

She reluctantly agrees to sacrifice her desires because of a death bed pledge she made to her mom to care for her two younger sisters. Bolton and his three daughters attend a ball at the home of Sir Rex de Warenne and Lady Blanche. Alexandra realizes her arrival is a blunder as her friends treat her like hired help since she has been doing their sewing. When her father becomes too drunk, she tries to take him home. On the way out, Alexandra meets thirtyish wealthy Stephen, the Duke of Clarewood. They are attracted to one another until he has her. Her father tosses her to the street as a fallen woman and her Stephen rejects her believing she was trying to trap him.

This is a superb early Victorian romance starring a courageous woman and the man she loves who is in denial. The story line of a good woman 'falling' to the street in rejection is not new (see Cheryl Holt's Spinster Curse saga), but incredibly refreshed by Brenda Joyce with her strong casting and not just the lead couple. Fans will admire Alexandra's moral fortitude while knowing she will survive her ordeal but wonder if she will be with Stephen or a new beau Owen. Brenda Joyce is at her best, which says something about this novel, as her historicals are always excellent.

Harriet Klausner. Historical romance fans are in for a great treat with Brenda Joyce's magnificent Victorian, AN IMPOSSIBLE ATTRACTION, the next wonderful novel in her de Warenne Dynasty series for HQN in March 2010. In 1845 Victorian England, Alexandra Bolton is told by her father, the baron of Edgemont, that he can't afford to keep her and expects her to accept the middle aged and well-to-do Squire Denney's suit.

With trepidation, Alexandra agrees once again to sacrifice her happiness for that of her family-since she has been supporting her two younger sisters and drunken gambler father by taking in sewing ever since her mother died years ago. However, Alexandra can't pay off her father's huge gambling debts or provide her sisters with dowries on her sewing income. Squire Denney invites Alexandra and her family to a ball at Harrington Hall, the home of Sir Rex de Warenne and Lady Blanche. When they arrive Alexandra realizes they've made a terrible mistake in attending. Her former friends shun them because they are now the nobility she works for! When her father imbibes too much and Alexandra tries to leave with him unnoticed Stephen Mowbray, the dashing Duke of Clarewood and richest peer of the realm, comes to her rescue.

Although the devastatingly handsome duke has increased the Clarewood fortune many times over and is well known for his philanthropy, he is also a cold-hearted womanizer, who has gone through many mistresses. At thirty-two Stephen is in no hurry to marry-he remains haunted by his unhappy childhood. Stephen calmly decides he wants Alexandra for his next mistress and that they will both benefit from the liaison. However, Alexandra is determined to deny Stephen, and when his charms prove too powerful to resist, she winds up exposed as a fallen woman, and thrown out of her own home, onto the very street. Believing that Alexandra meant to trap him into marriage, Stephen furiously turns his back on her.

Alexandra Bolton gave up her dreams when her mother became ill. She knew that the only way her family could stay together would be if she was the one to take care of them, and she did so at great cost to her happiness. Now, however, Alexandra isn't able to fix what is wrong. Her father has gone through all of their money with his drinking and gambling. Alexandra and her sisters are forced to sew for the local gentry who in turn make them social pariahs in the local village. Because of this destitution, Alexandra agrees to marry an old squire which doesn't really bother her until she comes face to face with the Duke of Clarewood.

Stephen Mowbray, the Duke of Clarewood, has come home to pay his respects to the former duke on the anniversary of his death. Growing up, Stephen had a horrible childhood where nothing he did suited his father. Of course, had the former duke actually been Stephen's father, things might have been different. But they weren't, and those facts elementally changed the way Stephen views life and especially marriage.

He has vowed to never marry - why put himself through the deplorable conditions as his father went through? Stephen swore years ago his duty would be to Clarewood and nothing and no one else. Women may try their hardest to set their marriageable daughters in his sights, but Stephen is immune. So immune that even his closest friends have given up on him - until one woman who is introduced to him at a party grabs his attention. Now Stephen is willing to do anything to have Alexandra Bolton - even defy society. Stephen is a womanizer to the bone.

His adult life is shaped by his childhood, and I can't blame him. I loved watching his free lifestyle end the moment he set his eyes upon Alexandra Bolton. The desire Stephen felt was instantaneous and reciprocated by Alexandra. Each character's finely veiled emotions captured the yearnings of their hearts. Alexandra loved Stephen just as much and was willing to forgo her reputation for him.

I can't say that I blame her because Stephen is truly a sensualist. Their loves scenes were sizzling hot and decadent and ultimately beautiful. Reading a Brenda Joyce historical is like slowly eating warm, melted chocolate. You dip the spoon slowly, twirl it around, and then grab a bite and sigh.

That is my behavior when I read Brenda Joyce, and most especially when I read one of her de Warenne novels. AN IMPOSSIBLE ATTRACTION will grab you and not let go - I wholeheartedly recommend reading this fabulous historical romance!
